K’Taqmkuk Mi’kmaw Historic Museum, St. George’s
St. George’s is an area rich with Mi’kmaq history. Mi’kmaq occupation of the area known as “Seal Rocks” has been documented as early as the 1700’s. Seal Rocks was the largest Mi’kmaq settlement on the West Coast of Newfoundland. It was established in 1804 as permanent settlement for the Mi’kmaq of Newfoundland and for the resettlement of the Mi’kmaq from Nova Scotia.

To celebrate this rich culture, the local historic courthouse has been renovated to house a cultural museum and interpretation center.

Sisters’ Dream School Museum, Mainland
The Sisters’ Dream School Museum offers visitors a glimpse of life from the early 1900s with a unique perspective of the Francophone roots of Mainland (La Grande Terre). Fishermen from France traveled across the waters from Red Island and built the one-room schoolhouse in 1910. The school also contained a small altar which served the spiritual needs of the community by travelling priests. Upon construction of a new school, the building was transformed into a Chapel in 1972. When a new chapel was constructed, this historic building was slated for demise. Thanks to a dream of two sisters, Johanna Cornect and Maggie Benoit, and the dedication of their families, a committee was formed to transform the school room into a museum to preserve the area’s culture and heritage.

Golf Course

In the 1960s, Harmon Seaside Links was built as a 9-hole course for US servicemen stationed at the Ernest Harmon Air Force Base. A 9-hole addition built by Graham Cooke has been added to the course, making it a unique 18-hole golf experience on the island.

Harmon’s beach breeze lends a pleasant atmosphere to the course while also demanding a player to pay attention to the prevailing winds on a course that combines a full links experience with somewhat treed holes.

Golfers will appreciate the finer elements on this course, which boasts a panoramic view of the hills around the Stephenville area.
